Notes, Sources, and Methodology
The data. The source is the School District of Philadelphia’s Employee_Data_All_Years release, twelve annual snapshots covering the 2014-15 through 2025-26 school years, 250,950 position rows in all. This tool reads the same cube the headcount tool does, so a title’s position count here is the count there.
How the medians work. Pay is the posted rate, and only salaried rows carry one worth charting: an hourly wage annualized at 1,800 hours would overstate every part-time role. The tool shows the distribution of salaried pay across eleven fixed bands and reads the median off the band where the cumulative count crosses half, interpolating inside that band. Every median uses that same method, so a number does not change meaning when you add a filter. The pay type column is the most common basis in that title. The payroll total is the one figure that pools exactly — it sums posted rates with the district’s own convention of salaried times 1.0, daily times 200 and hourly times 1,800, which is why it is labelled an estimate.
Limitations. 1,822 salaried positions across the twelve years carry no pay rate at all; they are counted in the headcount and sit outside the pay distribution. Pay is the posted rate, not total compensation: benefits, pension contributions and overtime are not in the file. The 2025-26 snapshot also reclassified hourly staff as daily — hourly positions fall from 3,801 to 179 while daily positions rise from 78 to 4,711 — so a position’s pay type is not comparable across that boundary.
